I appreciate that I used it to transfer a doorway shape onto flooring and got much closer on the first cut. Sloppy pencil tracing can still ruin a good profile, even though it's accurate enough for DIY work; The lock is useful, but I've to tighten it enough or the profile can move slightly.
Around trim pieces, this really is handy for odd corners where a tape measure doesn't tell the whole story. The pins slide with enough resistance to capture the shape without flopping around, and that is the part I notice most, which is why I usually keep reaching for it.
